“Mangrove Planting Activities for Natural Conservation
and Sustainable Environmental Management”
In response to the critical issue of coastal erosion and mangrove deforestation in the upper Gulf of Thailand, particularly affecting the Khlong Khon area of Samut Songkhram Province, Shinawatra University has initiated a project focusing on Environmental Aspects of Sustainability Activities. The project, rooted in community collaboration and local wisdom, aims to address the multifaceted challenges posed by environmental degradation through a holistic approach. Led by the School of Management, this endeavor integrates business knowledge with traditional practices to manage environmental, lifestyle, economic, and social issues unique to the Khlong Khon community.
Since its inception in 1991, the project has seen remarkable progress despite obstacles such as encroachment and resource depletion. Through the dedicated efforts of residents and the support of government agencies, the initiative has led to the successful restoration of mangrove forests and the rejuvenation of coastal ecosystems. Central to the project’s success is the recognition of mangroves as vital ecosystems that serve as natural barriers against coastal erosion and provide habitats for diverse marine life. By instilling awareness of the importance of mangrove conservation and sustainability principles, the project seeks to empower students and community members to become stewards of their environment.
Moreover, the project has catalyzed the development of ecotourism activities, providing additional income for the community while promoting sustainable travel practices. Visitors to Khlong Khon have the opportunity to engage in mangrove planting activities, learn about local fishing methods, and immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of the area. At its core, the project embodies Shinawatra University’s commitment to fostering environmental stewardship and sustainable development. By integrating local wisdom with modern knowledge, the project not only addresses immediate environmental challenges but also equips future generations with the skills and mindset necessary to navigate the complexities of the 21st century. As we continue to nurture sustainability in Khlong Khon and beyond, we invite you to join us in our journey towards a greener, more resilient future for all. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in preserving our planet for generations to come
